What is Formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas commonly found in building materials like plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), and particleboard, which are frequently used in carpentry and cabinetry. It is also used in adhesives, finishes, and insulation products. Over time, formaldehyde is released into the air, especially in newly renovated or constructed spaces.
While formaldehyde serves as an effective preservative and bonding agent, prolonged exposure can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, as well as respiratory issues. Formaldehyde is classified as a potential human carcinogen, meaning long-term exposure may increase the risk of developing cancer.
